The pizza necklace.

Our pizza was thawing. The inside plastic was beading with greasy humidity. Impressively, exposed to the sun, the pizza was warm and the cheese had melted to a delicious consistency. It smelled of plastic and week-old cheese, but like a fine wine, this pizza had matured with age.

Dysentery-defying tablets.

After my 7th fatal strike on the Oregon trail that week, I promised myself something: I would never die of dysentery again.

More importantly, I’d never let any of my family or loved ones go through that awful death again. That’s why, among other arguably more realistic reasons, I carry water purification tablets when I go backpacking.

And what do you do after five days of nonstop wear? You take a big ol’ whiff. I have a strong stomach and frankly think I smell like roses all the time, but even I couldn’t handle myself after this.
